How to Look After Your Feet for Tabbing
Boot fit, sock strategy, nail care, foot conditioning, pre-taping and blister management. Why foot problems needlessly end more courses than a lack of fitness does.
Foot problems are something that needlessly end a run at a course more than a lack of fitness might do.
Candidates train for the run times, the tabs, the carries and the strength tests. They drill kit assembly, navigation, and drills under fatigue. Almost nobody trains their feet to be 'harder', and again almost nobody plans for them going wrong in avoidable ways either.
A 1cm blister, ignored two hours into a march, changes how you walk by hour five. That altered gait produces a knee complaint by the end of week 1, and the knee really had nothing to do with it even if you've mentally grizzed through the pain of the blister. Or that same blister bursts in the field, doesn't get cleaned, and gets infected. Cellulitis will take you off a course or out of a phase faster than any fitness deficit will.
Months of structured preparation, undone by a piece of skin the size of a 5p coin.
Feet aren't an admin task you do after training. They're a vital infrastructure, and they need the same attention and planning as everything else in the programme.
Tabbing, yomping, rucking: what's the difference?
Different militaries use different words for the same job: walking or shuffling with load on your back and hips for extended periods of time.
Tabbing is the British term, Tactical Advance to Battle. Yomping is the Royal Marines version, popularised during the Falklands. Rucking is the American one. Same demand, same biomechanics, slightly different cultural baggage - this article uses tabbing by default.
Why do feet fail on long tabs?
Foot failure under load isn't entirely random and it isn't bad luck. It's a predictable consequence of seven factors that compound across the duration of a march.

The implication is that there are seven points of attack for you to look at preventing. Boot fit handles several at once. Sock choice handles moisture and friction. Conditioning hardens the tissue against impact and shear. No single intervention solves it all, which is exactly why single fixes rarely work and why foot care has to be layered.
How should tabbing boots fit?
The highest-leverage piece of foot care is a boot that fits. Get this wrong and nothing downstream is going to bmake a blind bit of difference. Sock choice won't. A good VO2 max certainly won't.
Four things cover the majority of things to look out for.

Size up half a size from your normal shoe size. Feet swell under load. A boot that fits perfectly fresh out of the box becomes a friction trap by hour four. The buffer acts as proctection.

Check the heel lock. Laced firmly, the heel shouldn't lift more than a few millimetres when you walk. Heel lift is the primary cause of posterior blisters and Achilles irritation under load, and those are the type of blisters that put you out or set you back by weeks.

Use the lace lock at the ankle. Most modern military boots have a hook or eyelet for it. The hook exists for a reason. It stops the foot sliding forward on descents, which is where toenails decide to up sticks and leave.

Protect toe box volume. You should be able to move your toes. Toes pressed against the front of the boot produce black nails, forefoot blisters and, over years, deformity. If your toes can't move, the boots are too short.
Break new boots in over weeks, not days. Short unloaded walks first, then short lightly loaded sessions, then distance. And for the love of all things holy, don't take a new pair onto a test march, no matter how good they felt in the shop.
How should you cut your toenails for tabbing?
Straight across. Never rounded.
Toenails are the piece of foot admin people either skip entirely or simply get wrong, and the second route causes more problems than the first.

Cut straight across. Following the curve of the toe and rounding the corners down leaves the edge of the nail growing into the skin fold at the side. That's an ingrown toenail, and an ingrown toenail inside a warm wet boot gets infected fast.

Don't cut them too short. Leave a sliver of white, roughly level with the end of the toe. Go into the quick and you've exposed the nail bed, which is then tender under every single step for days afterwards.

File the corners, don't cut them. If an edge feels sharp, take it down with a file. Cutting a notch into the corner leaves a spike that grows straight back into the skin.

Trim a few days out, not the night before. Freshly cut nails are often sharp and slightly sore. Give them a few days to settle before you put a Bergen on.

Keep them clean and dry. A warm damp boot is ideal conditions for fungal nail and athlete's foot. Thickened fungal nails take trauma more easily and are considerably harder to manage once established.
Length matters for a second reason, and it's the one that catches people out on hilly ground. On a long descent the foot slides forward and a long nail jams into the front of the boot. A few hours of that produces bleeding underneath the nail, a subungual haematoma, which is effectively a blister you can't get at. It usually means losing the nail a few weeks later.
Get that one looked at by a medic or a podiatrist rather than attacking it yourself.
What socks should you wear for tabbing?
Sock choice is the most under-thought variable in tabbing, and it's the cheapest fix available. Get it right and you handle moisture and friction at the same time.

Synthetic or wool blend. Coolmax, merino, or branded military equivalents such as Bridgedale, Darn Tough and 1000 Mile. These wick moisture away from the skin and cut friction.

Never cotton. It absorbs sweat, holds it against the foot, softens the skin and multiplies blister risk. This one isn't negotiable.

Consider a liner. A thin synthetic liner under a thicker outer sock lets the two layers slide against each other instead of the skin sliding against a single sock. It works well for some people and causes bunching for others. The evidence is mixed and the cost is low, so test it in training.

Carry dry pairs. On long tabs, change socks at the first reasonable opportunity if your feet are soaked. A 30-second sock change at a halt has saved more feet, and therefore more course passes, than most of the kit in your daysack.
Validate socks in training the same way you validate boots. Test day isn't the time to try something new.
How do you condition your feet for tabbing?
Feet are tissue. Tissue adapts.
The same progressive overload principle that builds aerobic capacity and bone density builds foot resilience. Most people never train it directly, then wonder why their feet fold at week six of a build-up.
Three layers to the conditioning programme.
Progressive load and distance
This is the core tabbing principle applied to the feet specifically. Build distance and weight over months, not weeks. The skin, plantar fascia and intrinsic foot muscles all need exposure time to adapt. Cap weekly increases at 10-15%, change one variable at a time (load, distance or speed), and deload every fourth week.
Specific foot strengthening
Five low-cost drills hold up the foundation.

Calf raises, straight knee (gastrocnemius) and bent knee (soleus). 3-5 sets of 8-20 reps, two or three times a week. Builds the calf complex that absorbs ground reaction forces.

Tibialis anterior raises, heel to wall, toes lifted against resistance. Can offer some protection against shin pain and the anterior overload that comes with descents under weight. Worth doing, though the benefits are a little overstated on social media.

Toe spreads and toe yoga. Simple drills that strengthen the intrinsic foot muscles.

Single-leg balance, 60 seconds per side, eyes open then closed. Builds the proprioceptive base.

Time barefoot at home. Free, easy, and it rebuilds intrinsic capacity that time in a supportive boot has been quietly taking off you.
Ten minutes a week across the whole lot is plenty, and it returns more than it costs.
Tabbing-specific exposure
Walk unloaded in your tabbing boots regularly. Build short loaded walks before long loaded walks. Don't make every tabbing session a maximal effort. Most should be sub-maximal exposure to the boot, load and ground combination.
No shortcut here. The trajectory is reliable and it takes months.
Do you blister in the same places every time?
Blisters aren't always random. Yours turn up in the same two or three spots on every long tab, because they're driven by your anatomy, your gait and your boots, and none of those change much from one week to the next.
That repeatability is useful, and almost nobody uses it.
After every long tab, write down where the hot spots were. Heel, medial forefoot, base of the little toe, wherever it was. Three or four tabs and you've got a map of your own failure points. Then tape those spots before you set off, rather than waiting for them to burn up at hour three.
The research on this is worth knowing, mostly because of how it developed. Lipman and colleagues (2014) applied cheap paper tape to most of the common blister-prone areas on one foot of ultramarathon runners, and compared it against the untaped foot. Taping broadly like that produced no benefit.
They ran it again with one change. In the second trial (Lipman et al., 2016), the tape went onto each runner's own blister-prone areas rather than a standard pattern. Across 128 runners at four 250km desert ultramarathons, taped sites blistered in 23% of cases against 63% for untaped sites, a reduction of roughly 40%.
Same tape, both times. What changed was whether it went where that individual actually blisters.
That's the argument for keeping the record.
How do you pre-tape your feet properly?
The application matters more than the tape. Zinc oxide, paper tape, kinesiology tape and moleskin all work. What separates a tape job that lasts eight hours from one that peels at hour two is how it goes on.

Clean, dry skin. No cream, no damp, no dirt. Tape won't stick to a moisturised foot. It lifts and rolls into a ridge instead, and the ridge is worse than no tape at all.

No wrinkles. Lay it flat with no tension. A crease in the tape becomes the new friction point.

Round the corners. Square corners catch on the sock and start the peel. Ten seconds with scissors.

Don't wrap tight around a toe. Foot volume rises around 10% over a long tab. A snug wrap at the start becomes a tourniquet at hour five.

Cover the whole area, with margin. Tape the edges of the hot spot, not just the centre. The border is where shear happens.
Rehearse it on long training tabs. The first time you pre-tape shouldn't be the morning of a 30-miler, because that's when you find out whether your method survives four hours and a river crossing.
One caveat. If you need tape on six different sites, the tape isn't the answer. Your boots are wrong, and no amount of zinc oxide fixes a boot that doesn't fit.
How do you prep your feet on the day?
Pre-event prep is small and protective. The big work was done in the weeks before.

Clean, dry feet at the start. Talcum powder or a foot-specific antiperspirant reduces moisture build-up in the first hour or two. The effect fades, but the early protection is worth having.

Nails trimmed two or three days out. Not on the morning. See the nail section above for how.

Tape your known vulnerable areas. Heel, ball, big toe, wherever your map says. Prophylactic taping is far cheaper than treating a formed blister mid-march.

Stay hydrated. Dehydration thickens blood, reduces tissue perfusion and, in some studies, increases blister risk. Standard pre-event hydration applies.
A note on Vaseline. It's been used for decades and plenty of soldiers swear by it. The research is mixed. Under some conditions it reduces friction, under others, particularly with cotton socks which you shouldn't be wearing anyway, it increases moisture build-up and worsens blister rates. Test it in training, not on a key march.
How do you treat hot spots and blisters in the field?
The single most important rule of in-field foot care is to stop early. Always.
A hot spot at minute 30 might cost you 60 seconds. The same spot, ignored until minute 90, costs you the course and three weeks of recovery. Easy enough when it's written down or said out loud, harder when you're mid-file and don't want to be the one calling a halt.

Hot spot, burning, no fluid. Cover with zinc oxide tape, moleskin or a hydrocolloid plaster. Boot back on, back on your feet inside a minute.

Formed blister, small, under 1cm. Hydrocolloid plaster, Compeed style. It cushions, stays on through sweat, and significantly reduces the risk of the blister bursting open.

Formed blister, large or under high friction. Drain it. Use a sterile needle, cleaned with iodine or alcohol if you have it. Pierce at the edge in two or three points, gently press the fluid out, and leave the roof of skin intact. That roof is the best dressing you've got. Cover with hydrocolloid or moleskin.

Burst blister. Clean with antiseptic. Don't peel the loose skin, trim only what's hanging free. Cover heavily and check it daily for infection.
Red streaking, spreading pain, swelling beyond the immediate area or any fever means medical, not more tape and a couple of painkillers. Cellulitis off the back of a burst blister is common in field conditions. Get it looked at.
How do you recover your feet between tabbing sessions?
Foot recovery is the underrated element, and the bit easily skipped. Most soldiers do the tab, hang their kit up and move on. The next session arrives on feet that haven't really recovered.

DRY DRY DRY - Air dry immediately. Boots off at the first opportunity. Wet skin is vulnerable skin.

Cool water rinse. Helps to settle inflammation. Skip the long hot soak, it softens the skin you need tough.

Moisturise once dry. Cracked skin tears. A basic foot cream is enough.

Roll the arch. Tennis or lacrosse ball, 60 seconds a foot. This is mainly about pleasant neural feedback rather than 'smashing' the tissue, and it's none the worse for that.

Inspect daily. Hot spots show up to the eye before they show up in your gait.

Rotate two pairs of (the same) boots if possible. Damp boots produce wet feet, and boots take longer to dry than you think.
What are the common mistakes in foot care for tabbing?
Five errors quietly wreck more courses than any single training mistake.
- New boots on a key march. Six to eight weeks of progressive wear before you trust a pair with any course that counts. The day of a key event isn't the day to find the hot spots.
- Pushing through a hot spot. Two minutes of tape against three weeks of recovery. Nobody logical or rational takes that bet, and yet....
- Cotton socks. Still remarkably common. Still the single easiest thing on this list to fix.
- Wrong size boot. Too tight crushes the forefoot. Too loose lets the heel move. The half-size-up rule plus the heel lock check catches most of it.
- No foot-specific work. Calves, tibialis, intrinsics. Ten minutes a week makes a measurable difference to tissue tolerance over months, and almost nobody does it.
Bottom line
Foot care is deeply unglamorous, and it's one of the highest-return elements of tactical preparation. Nobody has ever been impressed by a well-managed heel. Plenty of people have been binned by a badly managed one.
Four things to take into your week.

Get the boots right first. Half a size up, heel locked, lace lock used, toes free, broken in over weeks. Everything else is downstream of this.

Sort the socks. Synthetic or wool, never cotton, spare pair in the daysack.

Condition the feet like tissue. Calf raises, tibialis work, balance, time barefoot. Ten minutes a week.

Stop early on hot spots. Every time, no exceptions, regardless of who's watching. And since you blister in the same places every time, tape them before you set off rather than waiting to find out.
Do all four and your feet stop being the variable that decides whether you finish.

What's the difference between tabbing, yomping and rucking?
Three words for the same physical demand. Tabbing is the British Army term, Tactical Advance to Battle. Yomping is the Royal Marines term, popularised during the Falklands War. What boots are best for tabbing?
There's no single 'best' boot. The best boot is the one that fits your foot, accepts the loads you're putting through it, and gets broken in properly. For UK military use, issued AKU Pilgrim or Altberg variants are common starting points. Civilian alternatives such as Lowa, Meindl and Salomon Quest all have a place. Fit and break-in matter more than brand.
How should I cut my toenails before a tab?
Straight across, never rounded down at the corners, and not so short that you expose the nail bed. Leave a sliver of white roughly level with the end of the toe. File any sharp corners rather than cutting a notch into them, and trim two or three days out rather than the night before, so any tenderness has settled.
Why do I keep losing toenails after long tabs?
Almost always the foot sliding forward on descents and the nail jamming into the front of the boot. The repeated trauma causes bleeding under the nail, and the nail is shed weeks later. Fix the cause first: use the ankle lace lock, check boot length, and keep the nails trimmed. Get an established blood blister under a nail looked at by a medic or podiatrist.
Should I tape my feet before a tab?
Yes, if you know where you blister. Targeted taping of your own recurring hot spots is well supported by the research. Blanket taping of the whole foot isn't, which is why the record you keep after each tab matters more than the brand of tape you buy. Clean dry skin, no wrinkles, rounded corners, and cover the area with margin.
Do liner socks actually work?
They can. The mechanism is sound, two sock layers sliding against each other rather than the foot sliding against a single sock. The evidence is mixed but the downside is minimal. Some people find them transformative, others notice no difference. Test in training.
How long does it take to break in new boots?
Six to eight weeks of progressive wear is a sensible target. Start with short unloaded walks, build to unloaded distance, then add small loads, then test on shorter tabs before you trust them on long ones. Rushing the break-in produces blisters at exactly the time you most need clean feet.
Can I run in tabbing boots?
You can, and short runs in tabbing boots have a place in conditioning the feet and ankles to the boot. Don't make them your primary running shoe. They're heavier and stiffer than running-specific footwear, and prolonged road running in them increases overuse injury risk.
How do I treat a blister mid-march?
Stop. Inspect. If it's a hot spot, tape over it and continue. If it's a formed blister under 1cm, cover with a hydrocolloid plaster. If it's larger or under high friction, drain it with a sterile needle at the edge, leave the skin roof intact, and cover. Don't peel the roof off, it's natural protection. Red streaking, spreading swelling or fever means medical.
How often should I change my socks on a long carry?
Whenever they're wet and you have the opportunity. On a multi-day exercise, change daily as a minimum. On a long single-day tab, a sock change at the halfway mark can prevent significant damage if circumstances allow. Carry a clean dry pair in an accessible pocket.
How long does it take to harden up your feet?
Skin adaptation begins within days. Meaningful tissue resilience develops over months of progressive exposure. There's no shortcut to properly tough feet, but the trajectory is reliable. Keep loading them progressively and they'll tolerate what they didn't before.
